One More Day

You pull the arrows from my back

And soothe the wounds with love.

Reminding me of God’s concern,

His guidance from above.

I wake up in a nightmare

And realize it’s true.

This pain is still continuing

But then my eyes find you.

You’ve been there all along, asleep.

I wonder what you dream.

I pray you dance in floral fields

Where peace and laughter stream.

May happiness find and follow you

Through a long and healthy life

And may the most deserving man

Take you as his wife.

May the hands of little children

Tug upon your dress.

Their wondrous eyes reflecting

My source of happiness.

I could never give you

All that should be yours.

My time is insufficient

To open all the doors.

Someone else will have to do

The things I wish I could.

A man that offers youth and size

And wealth and fatherhood.

But, I can hold you until then

Proud that you’re with me.

And talk of love and friendship

That lasts eternally.

And we can sing and we can laugh

Looking back with tears,

Then, looking forward with a smile

To well-earned happy years.

Will we share them, you and I?

Or find them far apart?

Never knowing what transpires

Touching just by heart.

Could I ever bear to say

"Goodbye my dearest friend.

Have a long and happy life,

I'll see you at life's end!"?

I don't want to think about

The future in that way,

So, every night I'll pray that you

Will stay for one more day.
