A toothache and an aching back,

Barefoot kids and woes,

An empty fridge and broken heart,

Shoes wearing through the toes.

They have to walk to find a job,

And walk again to work,

If they get sick they’re back again,

And looked upon like dirt

With no money for a doctor,

They fear each ache and pain,

There’s no end to suffering,

And no way to explain.

They watch the wealthy upper class,

In fancy modern cars,

They hear of plastic surgeons,

And think about their scars.

There’s no rhyme or reason,

The world is so unfair,

They try to go on "welfare",

They learn the word "dispair".

And the children have to suffer,

At the Government’s neglect,

They get kicked out for truancy,

But how can they respect

The "educated" adults,

In their clean and fancy dress,

While Mom and Dad are fighting,

Because of all the stress.

They know they’re humans also,

And they deserve a share,

But they were raised to realize,

The world is so unfair.

I see this everywhere I look,

It hurts my tired eyes,

I was there when I was young,

And had to realize:

You have to keep on trying,

There is no fast way out.

You can’t stop to figure,

What it’s all about.

You cry yourself to sleep at night,

Say prayer after prayer,

You ask God to make the world

Just a little fairer.

It just comes down to luck, I guess,

Perhaps we’re better off,

Without a comfy jacket,

With a fever and a cough,

Never knowing when we’ll eat,

Or how we’ll pay the rent,

Or begging for a handout,

Or living in a tent,

Than sitting high and mighty,

And living with the guilt,

Surrounded by so many,

That the lesser hand was dealt.

At least I know that I can give,

A loving smile to those,

That always seem to smile back,

With torn and tattered clothes.

Perhaps they understand that I,

Have had their world to share,

I’d like to think so anyway,

The world is so unfair.
